FIREFIGHTING AWARDS



A fireman who risks his life to rescue a man and the child from a blazing house should be awarded for his bravery. There are so many awards which are given to the firefighters for working fearlessly without taking care of their own life only for public security .Some of the awards are discussed below :


The Green Cross Award is granted by Hurst, the maker of Jaws of Life, to those who use the device to save lives and property. The Green Cross for Safety Medal is awarded annually by the National Safety Council to the president of an organization that has distinguished itself over a period of years for outstanding achievements in workplace and off-the-job safety and health, community service, environmental stewardship, and responsible citizenship.
Volunteer Fireman Award : Recently, the Huntington Beach Masons Lodge No. 380 instituted its first annual Volunteer Fireman Award to honor the "Firefighter who has displayed exemplary community spirit and dedicated such time and effort to this community." They noted that to honor and recognize one special firefighter, would be to recognize and honor all those Huntington Beach firefighters of a similar character. This year, Captain Bob Culhane was chosen as the recipient and was feted at a special dinner and formal presentation ceremony on October 27. All his family and friends were invited to attend.
Provincial Awards : The Fire Marshal may award certificates of appreciation to fire service personnel or Office of the Fire Marshal staff deserving of such a recognition for specific years of service or upon retirement.

The Fire Services Exemplary Services Medal : In 1980, the Canadian Government decided to accept in principle a system for recognizing long and outstanding service to those employed in a high-risk profession that provides public security.
The Police Exemplary Service Medal: This was created in August 1983 and the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal followed in June 1984. Proposals to create a service medal for full-time and volunteer fire fighters, the Fire Service Exemplary Medal, received its letters of patent on August 29, 1985.


Firefighter Survival Award: Each year the Academy presents an award to a fire department that sets the benchmark for implementing Rapid Intervention Teams and advancing Firefighter Survival skills.


Del Moffitt Firefighter of the Year Award: In 1966 the Alaska State Firefighters Association adopted a resolution the Del Moffitt Firefighter of the Year award. It is furnished and maintained by the Ketchikan Volunteer Department. The award is based on criteria accepted by the association and given to the firefighter that meets those standards. It has become a part of each convention and something coveted by each firefighter in Alaska.
Brookfield Firefighter Award : The awards, begun in 1995 ,and given to the volunteer firefighters $10 per month per year of service, beginning after they have completed five years of service. They also have to respond to at least 10 percent of calls per year, go to a certain number of annual meetings and drills, and help with maintenance at the department
Firefighters Honored As LCVA Bestows Tourism Awards : Fire crews that save the historic places , schools ,auditorium etc.are awarded by distinguished service award from the tourism industry .While heavy fire destroyed the auditorium section that was built in 1928, crews saved the former Waterford school, which was built in 1910. Crews also worked with village residents to save artwork, books and other material stored in the building the Waterford Foundation owns.


The Nevada State Firefighters' Association offers two prestigious awards:
The Dave Drew Fire Instructor Excellence Award and the Fire Department of the Year Award: Both awards are issued during the annual training conference held in June of each year. Nominations for these awards are received by the Nevada State Firefighters' Association by April 15th of the upcoming year. The Nevada State Firefighters' Association, Fire Agency Insurance Risk Authority, and Command Designs will annually recognize an instructor from the Nevada Fire Service who has demonstrated dedication and commitment, and has contributed to fire service education and training in a number of ways.


Courage And Valor Award: The Courage and Valor Award is presented to one extraordinarily courageous American firefighter each year. This award is given for lifetime and unparalleled service to firefighters and citizens and in remembrance of the courage.


Fire Service Woman of Pennsylvania Award :This award is given to honor a female firefighter who has contributed significantly to the development and growth of fire and emergency services in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania .


Carnegie Medal : The award is presented by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, a Pittsburgh-based philanthropic foundation, to close to a hundred people each year who risk their lives to save another.
