LEVELS OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)



EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) is divided into following levels:-


FIRST RESPONDER


First Responders traditionally work in volunteer fire departments and police departments. First Responders do advanced first aid techniques until the ambulance with higher trained personnel’s and modern equipments arrives and assumes responsibility for patient care. Many people take the First Responder course as a first aid course for their own information and to take care for their families and other people in their surroundings in case of an emergency.


EMT-BASIC
EMT-BASIC is an entry level position in EMS ambulance providers. This provides basic level medical treatment and trauma care and limited medications. In this people are required to attend a state-approved, 110-hour training course. The EMT-Basic training focuses on care of life-threatening conditions, care of non-life threatening situations, and other issues related to the care of the sick or injured patients or people. The EMT-B is responsible for continuing the initial care which is provided by the First Responder and transporting the patient to the hospital in an ambulance. EMT-B skills include CPR, first aid, airway management, oxygen administration, spinal immobilization, bleeding control and traction splinting


EMT-INTERMEDIATE / 85:-
EMT-Intermediate provides limited medications and IV's. The people associated with EMT-Intermediate/85 are expected to attend a state-approved, 36-54 hour course in addition to the EMT-B training program. The main responsibility of the EMT-I in an emergency case is patient care. The EMT-I curriculum offers expanded information in order for the EMT to provide a more comprehensive physical exam for the patient. An EMT-I is required to be licensed annually through the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. An EMT-I practices skills and learns under a licensed physician by following the physician's established protocols.
EMT-INTERMEDIATE / 99
Where as in case of EMT-Intermediate/99 a person is required to attend a state-approved, course in addition to the EMT-B training program with 300-400 total hours including 175-225 hours of classroom/practical hours, 50-75 clinical hours, 75-100 field internship. This level falls between the I/85 and the Paramedic provides more depth of patient care to the EMT candidate. EMT-I/99’s are capable of providing life saving care to patients in the pre-hospital field with increased knowledge and skills such as; advanced airway management, cardiac rhythm interpretation and treatment among other skills. An EMT-I/99 is required to be licensed annually through the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. An EMT-I practices skills and learns under a licensed physician by following the physician's established protocols.

EMT-PARAMEDIC
EMT-paramedic is an advanced level position in EMS. This provides numerous medications; IV's, advanced airway procedures, advanced medical treatments and trauma care. In this particular field a person is required to attend a state-approved training course which includes a minimum of 1,100 total hours of training and includes 540 hours of didactic, 320 hours of clinical observation, and 240 hours of pre-hospital, advanced life support observation. The training focuses on a more comprehensive physical assessment of a patient, knowledge of the human body, and the means to regulate certain life-threatening conditions. The EMT-Paramedics is trained to provide advanced cardiac life support to patients before their arrival in an emergency department. The main objective or motto of EMT-Paramedics is to provide quality, pre-hospital care to the patient in the least or the minimum amount of time and to transport the patient to a definitive care facility for further examination and evaluation. An EMT-P is required to be licensed annually through the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. The skills are practiced under a licensed physician by following specific protocols established by the physician.

RN to MEDIC
The RN to Paramedic course is currently being developed. This course will consist online didactic course work combined with lab and field / clinical time. The course will start in spring semester and end during the summer session.
